Oral Hygiene (20.5.24)
Children learned how to look after their teeth, including how to brush their teeth properly and which foods and drinks we shouldn’t have too many of. Children also learned why looking after their teeth is important and what could happen if they don’t look after them.
NSPCC (14.3.24)
All children in school watched age appropriate virtual assemblies around the topic of Speak Out Stay Safe and behaviours that are ok and not ok.
People from the NSPCC came into school to work with Class 4 and Class 2 as part of their Speak Out Stay Safe campaign. Both classes had a visit from the NSPCC mascot, Buddy who talked to them about who they could talk to if they needed help and advice. They identified the trusted adults who keep them safe in their lives and they were given NSPCC packs to complete.
National Careers Week (4.3.24)
For National Careers Week, we invited some inspirational role-models from our Sunnybrow family and Local Community to come in and talk to the children about their careers and their pathway into the roles. We started the week with Mrs Barron, who is a qualified Nurse. She spoke to the children about germs and did an activity with the children to show them the importance of washing your hands. Tuesday saw our very own Mr Vincent do an assembly with the children about his route through education and employment, which eventually led to his job as a teacher and Deputy Head. On Wednesday, we welcomed Ellie Featherstone. Ellie is a BMX rider and trainer, who has travelled the world competing at a very high level. The children loved watching Ellie do stunts and having a go on her bike! On Friday, Joe from Sports Kings did a talk about why he chose a career is sports and the qualifications he needed to get into his chosen profession. We also welcomed Ms Midgely, who did a brilliant hairdressing demonstration for us while she talked to the children about her pathway into hairdressing. Finally, to end careers week, Claire a Police dog handler came into school with Jet and Ben, her police dogs, to share a little information with the children about what her job entails. It was such an inspirational week for our children and really got them thinking about their ambitions for the future. A huge thank you to our wonderful guests for making it such a great week.
LGBT (1.3.24)
This year, the theme of LGBT+ History Month is Medicine – #UnderTheScope. To celebrate, each class learned about a different LGBT person who worked in medicine. Class 3 learned all about Margaret ‘Meg’ Stacey, a sociologist. They discovered that she researched the well-being of children receiving medical care, helped improve the conditions for children in hospital and worked towards gaining equality in education. She was also the first female professor at the University or Warwick! We created fact files about Meg to celebrate her achievements in life.
Class 1 celebrated LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to medicine and healthcare, both in the past and now.
We focused on a lady from History called Sophia Jet Blake. She was the first female to got to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. She fought hard to work in a field that was, until then, male dominant. She inspired people all over the world to follow their passions and make a difference.
We talked about what we would like to be when we grow up and we played doctors.
Healthy Eating Workshops (27.2.24)
Our school meal provider, Chartwells, came into school to work with each class on making healthy snacks.
Children’s Mental Health Week (5.2.24)
As part of our Children’s Mental Health Week, we decided to focus on ‘ A Healthy and Balanced Diet’ which is one of our 5 Ways to Shine. For this, each class was tasked with planning and preparing a healthy dish that would be judged. Each class discussed what a healthy, balanced diet consists of or should include, they then worked together to decide what to make. All children were involved in cooking and preparing the food. Classes produced some very tasty dishes, including, vegetable pasta, chicken fajitas, bruschetta and spaghetti bolognaise, stir fry and raisin biscuits.
