Year 5/6 Handball Festival (18.09.23)
The children in Class 4 all represented the school at our first sporting festival of the year. We played Handball against 4 other schools from our cluster. We split our children into 3 teams. Our first team finished 2nd in their league, while our second team won their league with our third team finishing 4th in the same league. It was a fantastic opportunity for all of the children to practice our teamwork and communication skills in a competitive environment. It also provided a great opportunity to experience winning and losing and how we can deal with those emotions. Festivals are great in getting whole classes involved with practising skills against other children from different schools.
Year 5/6 Netball Level 2 Competition (22.09.23)
Seven of our Year 5/6 children represented the school in the first Level 2 competition of the year. These competitions provide the opportunity to qualify for the County Finals at the end of the year. They are only for the children who really want to compete, and are played at a very high, competitive standard. The children who represented the school did brilliantly in finishing 2nd (winning 4 out of their 5 games), losing out on 1st place by 3 points (one loss). All of our children represented the school fantastically, showing real sportsmanship in victory and defeat.
Tag Rugby Central Venue League (14-28th September 2023)
Our first league of the year was our Tag Rugby League. We competed against five other schools from the area over 3 Wednesday evenings. All of the children who were picked for the school played incredibly well, considering we didn’t have any practice. Unfortunately we did not win any matches but all of the children competed and played brilliantly across all of the matches. They supported each other and represented the school fantastically. They all really enjoyed the experience!
Kurling and Boccia Festival (02.10.23)
Our Year 1 and 2 children all went to Wolsingham Secondary School to take part in a Kurling and Boccia festival. The whole class took part in a little carousel of activities which all worked on Kurling and Boccia skills. Each station was a different activity where children had to work together to earn as many points as they could. At the end of the time, all of the scores were totalled up and compared to the other schools, who were there, to decide who the winners were. We did really well and came 3rd and 6th out of 12 teams. All of the children really enjoyed themselves and used the opportunity to develop some basic skills linked to Kurling and Boccia.
Cross Country Level 2 Event (10.11.23)
Some of our Key Stage 2 children took part in the second Level 2 event of the year at Staindrop Academy. There were four races overall (Year 3/4 Girls, Year 3/4 Boys, Year 5/6 Girls and Year 5/6 Boys). We took 6 children per team and the aim was to finish as high as you could in each race. Each runners positions would be added together to give an overall score for each team. The top three teams (schools) from each category qualified for the County Finals. Despite the muddy and wet conditions we had some great performances and all of the children tried their best and never gave up. They all finished their races but unfortunately did not qualify as one of the the top 3 teams. We had some good finishes (some as high as 23rd out of 150), and all of the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Year 5/6 Football Central Venue League (10th – 24th November)
Twelve of our Year 5/6 children are currently representing the school in the second CVL of the year at Parkside Academy. So far we have played one round of fixtures (10.11.23), where we lost our first league match 4-1 before the floodlights failed and we could not complete any more matches this week. We will have three fixtures next week (17.11.23) and another three during the final week (24.11.23) to finish off our league. The winners from this Friday night league compete in a finals night against the winners of the Wednesday and Thursday night leagues to decide who qualifies for the County Finals.
Dodgeball League (January 2024)
This half-term the Year 6 children represented our school in the local Dodgeball league fixtures at Bishop Barrington School. They played brilliantly, only missing out on a place in the top 2, and qualifying for finals week, by one point! It came right down to the last game when a win over Thornhill would have seen them qualify. Unfortunately they only managed a draw, but it was incredibly close!
Multi-skills Festival (08.03.24)
Tobey and Lucas-Jay represented Sunnybrow Primary in a multi-skills festival. They were fantastic ambassadors for the school and excelled in the different activities on offer!
Class 3 Tennis Festival (11.03.24)
Class 3 had a brilliant time at their Tennis Festival. Everyone tried their best and worked very well in their teams. We were very impressed with their positive attitude, resilience and behaviour.
An extra special well done goes to the blue team, who came first out of 10 teams!
Badminton World Cup (15.03.24)
A massive well done to Jaydan and Sangari, who represented the school at the Badminton World Cup at Bishop Barrington this afternoon. They finished first out of 9 schools, remaining unbeaten throughout, winning 6 and drawing 2. This was another Level 2 competition which provides the opportunity for the children to compete at a competitive level, with the opportunity to qualify for County Finals.
They played fantastically, and showed excellent skill throughout. Well done to both of you, you should be very proud!
Girls World Cup Football (22.03.24)
Our Year 5 and 6 girls represented the school at St John’s this morning in the World Cup. They played incredibly well in their 8 matches, winning 5, drawing 2 and only losing 1. They only conceded 2 goals throughout. Unfortunately it was not enough to qualify from our group, as they finished 3rd and missed out on the top 2 positions and a place in the semi-finals. All of the girls played fantastically, they supported each other and represented the school brilliantly. We could not be prouder of them!
Spring Term PE
Spring has been a very busy month for PESSPA. ALl of our achievements this term outside of school are above. PE is the most important part of PESSPA as it gives us all an opportunity to practice those key movement skills, tactics and teamwork skills we all need in everyday life, not just in our school sport competitions, leagues and festivals.
This term Class 1 have been continuing to work on their throwing and catching skills before they moved on to more generic ball skills and games.
Classes 2 and 3 have been focusing on Orienteering and Benchball. Orienteering provides us with an excellent opportunity to get out and about around the school and has excellent cross-curricular links with other subjects such as Geography and Maths. Benchball is a fantastic sport which lends itself to many of the key skills we look to develop in our PE sesssions. Skills such as hand-eye co-ordination, throwing and catching, movement skills, understanding space, understanding tactics and continuing to develop those all important social skills. While our PE sessions are designed to focus on developing the key skills we identify, we also try and include some kind of competitive, adapted game in our sessions, to allow children that experience of how to deal with winning and losing.
Spring Term Breakfast Club
Our fantastic Active Breakfast Club, which is run by Sport Kings, has continued to be a massive success this term. Joe, our brilliant coach, runs games for the children who attend from 8am every morning. It’s open to all children across the school and is a fantastic opportunity to play with the younger children and get that early morning mental stimulation that sets us up brilliantly for the rest of the school day. Joe runs all kinds of games including variations of Tag, Bulldog, Football, Benchball, Dodgeball, Handball, and lots of different mini-games to get the children up and active first thing in the morning.
