Welcome to our fantastic class for the oldest pupils in school!
A bit about us…
Class 4 is our upper Key Stage 2 class for Year 5 & 6 pupils. Our class teacher is Miss Murphy . She is constantly keeping the pupils on their toes, stretching and challenging their learning, helping them to collaborate with each other, encouraging them in their strengths and supporting each pupil as they demonstrate determination, perseverance and resilience, in order to make the very best of themselves.
Whilst we work hard in Year 5 and 6, be prepared for lots of fun and to take part in lots of sports! We love sports in Class 4 and take part in local sporting leagues, where we learn new skills and how to work as part of a team!
Year 6
Year 6 is an incredibly important year, giving children the opportunity to bring together all of their prior learning in preparation to achieve the highest academic level possible ready to embark upon the next step at secondary school. It is also the year that pupils take parts in SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests) in Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and Maths. These take part annually in the month of May.

Things you should know:
*Each child is given a reading book to read at home. Children will be listened to reading during shared reading sessions, as well as by different adults in school. Reading at home is expected and encouraged; we aim for at least 3 times a week as this will really help your children’s progress.

What have Class Four been up to?
September
Wow, what a busy start to the year! Class 4 have settled back into their routines very well and have been hard at work. Here’s what we have been up to:
In geography, we have been recapping our place knowledge, starting with UK countries & seas and continents & oceans of the world. Then, we explored a more complex type of map, called OS maps. We looked at our local area using OS map symbols and six-figure grid references. This helped us to use digital mapping to plan a route in our local area, which we are looking forward to following in October!
As part of our Voice 21 project, we have been working on developing our oracy skills. This month, we tried a brand new grouping called a fishbowl! The children in the inner circle were given talk tactic roles (instigator, builder, challenger, clarifier, summariser), whilst the children in the outer circle were our oracy experts. The oracy experts looked out for children who were showing the 5Ls of listening, using sentence stems and inviting others into the conversation. Both groups were fantastic! As well as developing our exploratory talk, we also practised presentational talk after we had made powerpoints in science about changes that happen when we grow older. Children spoke clearly, with a good level of pace and expression. Some children managed to face their audience and use gestures to emphasise their points.
In PESSPA, we have been enjoying learning how to play tag rugby. There are some tricky elements to the sport and lots of rules to remember, but we’ve been working hard and improving each week. We’ve started to make better use of space, dodge and weave, look over our shoulders as we pass backwards and make sprints while holding the ball accurately.
September is one of our favourite months, as we celebrate European Day of Languages. This year, the whole school focused on Romania. One of our wonderful Year 6 pupils led an assembly to tell us all about his home country of Romania and introduce our ‘Passports to Romania’. Each class took part in different activities, including exploring Romania on maps, creating folk art, practising some simple phrases, listening to Romanian stories and music, as well as tasting some delicious Romanian snacks! Everyone had so much fun!
